Plural on the Table
Our family is plural in many ways. As in many immigrant and multicultural families, one of the most distinct examples of being a plural family is on The Table.
My father was from Yamagata and my maternal grandmother from Hokkaido, but they cooked both Japanese and western food. Grandma’s feijão was the best, I must say! My nikkei (second generation of Japanese) mother cooks Japanese and regional Japanese food like no one. Even her Japanese friend asks her to make Japanese dishes!
Growing up, we had sushi, turkey and lasagna on our Christmas feast table, and on New Year’s day we had, and still have both Brazilian and Japanese food.
I’m glad that my daughter is also open to all these mixed up, fused palette of experiences!
In my opinion, this culinary diversity that we inherited is the most precious gift we’ve got, and we love it!
